🌱 U.S. & Canada: The Tariffs Begin

Morning, Grower.
We have a short one for you today.
The most important news so far in 2025 for Ontario farmers…
Tariffs. 🤦

U.S. & Canada: The Tariffs Begin
Here we go… tariffs on both sides have begun.
The U.S. announced that it is imposing tariffs of 25% on Canadian goods and 10% on energy exports from Canada, imported into the U.S. from Canada effective February 4, 2025.
Whether you love or hate him, this will cause a lot of uncertainty for Ontario.
The recent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian products introduce new challenges for Ontario’s agriculture sector, particularly its greenhouse industry. With 60% of Canadian produce and 90% of greenhouse-grown produce exported to the U.S., these tariffs will undoubtedly impact farmers and food producers. Another concern is job security. The Ontario agri-food industry is a major employer, and up to 29,000 greenhouse jobs in Ontario could be affected.
Government support and investment in new trade partnerships could help soften the impact but we are still early. This could encourage a shift towards diversification—exploring new markets in Europe and Asia or focusing on strengthening Canada’s own food supply chain.
In response, Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs starting with a 25% tariff on $155 billion in U.S. exports. Canada’s tariff on the U.S. will begin on Feb 4th with $30 billion in U.S. exports and $125 billion within three weeks.
We will always stand up for Canada.
