China’s Tariffs on Canadian Agricultural Products

Buckle up… the world’s trade wars continue.

China is imposing retaliatory tariffs on Canadian agricultural products. Announced on March 8, 2025, these tariffs will take effect on March 20, 2025 and include:

  • 100% tariffs on Canadian rapeseed (canola) oil, oil cakes, and peas.

  • 25% tariffs on pork and aquatic products.

The tariffs are in response to Canada’s duties on Chinese electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum imposed last October. These measures are expected to significantly impact Canadian farmers, particularly canola producers, as China is a major export market for these products

According to the Canola Council of Canada, Canada is the leading global producer of rapeseed, with China ranking as its second-largest market. In 2023, Canadian canola seed, oil, and meal exports to China were valued at about $3.7 billion.
